Prairie View A&M annually awards the second most STEM degrees in the Texas A&M University System. [23] Prairie View A&M academic programs are accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges and each college within the university holds additional accreditation or certifications. Though Alabama A&M is Alabama's official 1890 Morrill Act institution, the mission and unique history of Tuskegee are so similar to those of the 1890 institutions that it functions as a de facto land-grant university and is almost universally regarded as one of them. Tuskegee is a land-grant member of APLU, as are Alabama A&M and Auburn.
The 2024–25 Prairie View A&M Panthers basketball team represents Prairie View A&M University during the 2024–25 NCAA Division I men's basketball season.The Panthers, led by ninth-year head coach Byron Smith, play their home games at the William Nicks Building in Prairie View, Texas as members of the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC).
Prairie View A&M has also won five Black college football national championships, which are awarded to the best HBCUs in the country. Prairie View A&M's last such title came in 1964.
The first football coach at Prairie View was Henry B. Hucles, who began in 1924. Before Hucles's arrival at Prairie View, the school played two games without a coach on record: a 1907 7–0 win against a team from Wylie, Texas [3] and a 1920 7–6 loss to Tuskegee University. [4] Prairie View's most recognized and celebrated coach was Billy Nicks.
