Older, cheaper, or faster LCDs, especially those using TN, often represent colors using only 6 bits per RGB color, or 18 bit in total, and are unable to display the 16.78 million color shades (24-bit truecolor) that contemporary signal sources like graphics cards, video game consoles, set-top boxes, and video cameras can output.
When an older monochrome original Game Boy game cartridge (Type 1) is plugged-in, the Game Boy Color first tries to apply a palette from a hard-coded game list in the device's ROM. If the system does not have a palette stored for a game, it defaults to the "Dark green" palette (see below). The player can also choose one of 12 false color palettes.
The nearly-square (but landscape) aspect ratio and coarse pixel resolution gave these games a characteristic visual style. Colour depth ranged from 4 colours (2 bpp) with the original Game Boy, through 16–32 colours (4–5 bpp) with the Game Gear, to a maximum of 56 colours (equivalent of 6 bpp) from a wider palette with the Game Boy Color.

MacOS refers to 24-bit color as "millions of colors". The term true color is sometimes used to mean what this article is calling direct color. [18]
