West Branch is a city in Cedar and Johnson counties in the U.S. state of Iowa. The population was 2,509 as of the 2020 census. [3] It is the birthplace of the only American president born in Iowa, Herbert Hoover. The Johnson County portion of West Branch is part of the Iowa City, Iowa Metropolitan Statistical Area.

Cedar County was formed on December 21, 1837, from sections of Dubuque County. It was named for the Cedar River. In 1840, the City of Tipton, the current county seat, was established. Before the Civil War, the area around West Branch was an active focal point of the Underground Railroad, a network for the freeing of slaves from the southern states.
Springdale Township covers an area of 36.37 square miles (94.2 km 2) and contains one incorporated settlement, West Branch.According to the USGS, it contains six cemeteries: Chamness, Downey, Hickory Grove, Old Friends, Springdale and West Branch.
Shortly after it was built, Nate Crook opened a restaurant and barber shop in a building at 102 W. Main. He later expanded the building to become a hotel and livery. The West Branch Bank opened at 104 W. Main in 1875, though it moved across the street three years later. The next period of growth was the 1890s.

The Gruwell and Crew General Store is one of the oldest buildings in West Branch, Iowa. Mayor S.C. Gruwell and J.C. Crew built the structure in 1894, it operated as a music store, harness shop, shoe repair shop, and as a variety store. In 1964 the West Branch Heritage Foundation converted it to a museum.
