Longwood House is a mansion on the British overseas territory island of St. Helena. It was the final residence of Napoleon Bonaparte , the former Emperor of the French , during his exile on the island of Saint Helena , from 10 December 1815 until his death on 5 May 1821.
The house was built 1791-2 by the East India Company, as a "country" or summer residence for the governor.The company governed the island until 1834, when it became a crown colony, although governors of the island have continued to use the property since.
The Frogmore Plantation Complex, located on Saint Helena Island, in Beaufort County, South Carolina, is significant for several reasons. [2] [3] First, the plantation home, along with its contributing properties (i.e. pump house, barn, windmill/water tower), offers an excellent example of the area's architectural development from 1790 to 1920.
It was built about 1900, and is a narrow, one-story gable roofed building of frame construction with the entrance in the gable end. It is significant as one of four known extant African-American praise houses on St. Helena Island, and was a central place in the religious and social life of the black islanders. [2] [3]
