Picture of a longbow made with wood, 2013. A longbow is a type of tall bow that makes a fairly long draw possible. Longbows for hunting and warfare have been made from many different woods in many cultures; in Europe they date from the Paleolithic era and, since the Bronze Age, were made mainly from yew, or from wych elm if yew was unavailable.
A modern longbow's draw is typically 60 lb f (270 N) or less, and by modern convention measured at 28 inches (71.1 cm). Historically, hunting bows usually had draw weights of 50–60 lb f (220–270 N), which is enough for all but the very largest game and which most reasonably fit adults can manage with practice.
For example, a 27 kg (60 lb) bow with 80% let-off only requires 53 N (12 lb f) to hold at full draw. Up to 99% let-off is possible. [54] The compound bow was invented by Holless Wilbur Allen in the 1960s (a US patent was filed in 1966 and granted in 1969) and it has become the most widely used type of bow for all forms of archery in North America.
