(Vipsania) Agrippina the Elder [1] (also, in Latin, Agrippina Germanici, [1] "Germanicus's Agrippina"; c. 14 BC – AD 33) was a prominent member of the Julio-Claudian dynasty. She was the daughter of Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa (a close supporter of the first Roman emperor, Augustus) and Augustus' daughter, Julia the Elder.
Germanicus was also the brother of the fourth emperor, Claudius, and the grandfather of the fifth emperor, Nero. [9] When Augustus' chosen successor, Gaius Caesar, died in AD 4, he briefly considered Germanicus as his heir. His wife Livia persuaded him to choose his stepson Tiberius instead.
In the summer of 19, Germanicus had left to take care of matters in Egypt, and when he returned he found that Piso had ignored his orders to the cities and the legions. Germanicus was furious and ordered Piso's recall to Rome. [10] During the feud, Germanicus fell ill and, though Piso had left the province, Germanicus claimed Piso had poisoned him.
