Immune-mediated thrombocytopaenia (IMT) is a disease common in dogs and rare in cats. The disease is characterised by a low platelet count caused by destruction of the platelets from the immune system. IMT is the most common cause of thrombocytopaenia in dogs. [1]
Low levels of platelets in turn may lead to prolonged or excessive bleeding. It is the most common coagulation disorder among intensive care patients and is seen in a fifth of medical patients and a third of surgical patients. [3] A normal human platelet count ranges from 150,000 to 450,000 platelets/microliter (μL) of blood. [4]
EDTA-dependent agglutination. In some individuals, clinically insignificant antibodies may cause in vitro agglutination of platelets. As a result of platelet clumping, platelet counts reported by automated counters may be much lower than the actual count in the blood because these devices cannot differentiate platelet clumps from individual cells.
SFTS is an emerging infectious disease causing fever, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of consciousness and heamorrhage. [1]SFTS has fatality rates ranging from 12% to as high as 30% in some areas due to multiple organ failure, thrombocytopenia (low platelet count), leucopenia (low white blood cell count), and elevated liver enzyme levels.
Severe side effects may include low blood cell counts, ... decreased platelet count (thrombocytopenia) ... Thiamazole is commonly used in cats to treat hyperthyroidism.
Type I-CAMT is more severe and is characterized by low platelet counts and an early progression of bone marrow aplasia associated with pancytopenia. [1] The second type of Congenital amegakaryocytic thrombocytopenia is milder and presents with a transient increase of platelet counts during the first year of life.

Within three hours, his platelets dropped to dangerously low levels and he experienced a seizure. [2] His platelet count remained extremely low for four days, finally returning to normal levels by the fifth day. [2] Bone marrow biopsy from Harrington's sternum demonstrated normal megakaryocytes, the cells necessary for platelet production. [2]
