Chernivtsi is located in the historic region of Bukovina, which is currently shared between Romania (south) and Ukraine (north). Chernivtsi is located in the southwest of Ukraine, in the eastern Carpathians, on the border between the Carpathians and the East European Plain, 40 km (25 miles) from the border with Romania.

Since 1775, Mamaivtsi, as part of the Duchy of Bukovina, was ruled by the Austrians, part of the Chernivtsi district (German Czernowitz). Until 18 July 2020, Mamaivtsi belonged to Kitsman Raion. The raion was abolished in July 2020 as part of the administrative reform of Ukraine, which reduced the number of raions of Chernivtsi Oblast to three.
