The station opened with the line on 13 August 1866, and had two wooden side platforms and an intermediate centre platform to serve the third centre line. The station opened 10 March 1862 and was closed for goods traffic on 3 November 1975. [3] It began life as the terminus of the Cobh (then Queenstown) section of the Cork, Youghal & Queenstown Railway. [4] The present station occupies only a small part of the old station building.
The older station was across from the western end of Orr Street, Queenstown and the Empire Hotel, without an extensive covering roof. It was covered in the 1920s.
