Belmont Mansion, also known as Acklen Hall, and originally known as Belle Monte, Belle Mont or Belmont, is a historic mansion located in Nashville, Tennessee. It was built by Joseph and Adelicia Acklen to serve as the center of their 180-acre summer estate in what was then country outside the city, and featured elaborate gardens and a zoo.
When married to her second husband, Joseph Alexander Smith Acklen, Adelicia Acklen built the Belmont Mansion in Nashville, Tennessee. She sold the property in 1887; it was converted for use as a girls' school and later junior college campus. It is now operated as a museum at the center of what is now known as Belmont University.
Ward–Belmont College was a women's college located in Nashville, Tennessee. [1] It formed from the merger of the Ward Seminary for Young Ladies and Belmont College for Young Women in 1913. The college was located on the grounds of the Belmont Mansion, the antebellum estate of Adelicia Hayes Franklin Acklen Cheatham.
The Belmont University Tower and Carillon is located approximately 528 ft (161 m) south of the Belmont Mansion on Belmont University's campus in Nashville, Tennessee. Located on the former summer estate of Colonel Joseph and Adelicia Acklen , the tower was constructed circa 1850 to be used as a water tower for the Belmont Mansion and gardens.
The Mansion and 30 acres (12 ha) were preserved by private owners. Five other families would live in the home until 1953, when the State of Tennessee bought the Mansion and eight outbuildings on the property to ensure its preservation. The state deeded the property to the Association for the Preservation of Tennessee Antiquities. [16]
Joseph and Adelicia Acklen resided primarily at the Louisiana Estates that she inherited from her first husband, Isaac Franklin, however, they also built a summer home, the Belmont Mansion, completed in 1853. [4] Acklen and Adelicia has six children, including U. S. Representative Joseph H. Acklen.
