The Taikyoku series is a series of kata in use in several types of karate.The name Taikyoku (太極) refers to the Chinese philosophical concept of Taiji.The Taikyoku kata were developed by Yoshitaka Funakoshi and introduced by Gichin Funakoshi as a way to simplify the principles of the already simplified Pinan/Heian series.
The development of Gōjū-ryū goes back to Higaonna Kanryō, (1853–1916), a native of Naha, Okinawa.Higaonna began studying Shuri-te as a child. Shorin-ryu Shidokan (小林流志道館, Shōrin-ryū Shidōkan) is the main branch of Shorin-ryū style of Okinawan karate, started by Katsuya Miyahira, Hanshi 10th Dan.. It should not be confused with the newer Japanese Shidōkan (世界空手道連盟士道館 World Karate Association Shidōkan), which was founded by Yoshiji Soeno in 1981, another style of knockdown karate.
