Kirkwood is a town in Broome County, New York, United States. The population was 5,495 as of the 2020 census. [3] The town is named after James P. Kirkwood, the civil engineer responsible for constructing the local railroad. The town is located within the Binghamton Metropolitan Area, and lies approximately 10 miles southeast of the city proper.
In 1921, a new high school was built on Kirkwood Road, near the location of what was to become Nipher Middle School. The school opened for classes in 1922. [24] Contracts for the work for the new Meacham Park School to educate Black children were awarded February 7, 1924. The school board also agreed to improve the Booker T. Washington School.
A new Kirkwood High School opened in 1955 on a 47-acre (190,000 m 2) campus and was designed with seven buildings set on a college-like campus. For the first time in the district, both Caucasian and African-American students were permitted to attend school together.
