The club's final match was a 4–0 defeat to Brechin City in the Forfarshire Cup on 3 January 1921, [6] and two months later the club gave up the hopeless struggle, donating the £10 balance in its account equally between Brechin City and Montrose. [7] The club was, in effect, replaced in 1922 by Arbroath Athletic, which was similarly unsuccessful.
It twice more won through the Qualifying Cup to play in the first round of the Scottish Cup. In the 1924–25 Scottish Cup the club lost at Kilmarnock; [13] in the 1926–27 Scottish Cup it lost 7–0 at home to Dundee United. [14] It entered the Forfarshire Cup from 1925–26 to 1928–29 but never won a tie. [15]
Two of the most significant games in the history of the fixture came in the 2009–10 Scottish Second Division Play-offs, where after a first leg goalless draw at Gayfield, Forfar came out in the 2nd leg as 2–0 winners and would take Arbroath's place in the 2010–11 Scottish Second Division. [9]
