Apatity (Russian: Апатиты, IPA: [əpɐˈtʲitɨ], lit. apatites ) is a town in Murmansk Oblast , Russia , located along the Murman Railway , 23 km (14 mi) west of Kirovsk and 185 km (115 mi) south of Murmansk , the administrative center of the oblast .
The town of Apatity in the Arctic North of Russia was named for its mining operations for these ores. Apatite is an ore mineral at the Hoidas Lake rare-earth project.

Kirovsk–Apatity Airport was officially opened in 1994, developed on a former Soviet Air Force/Russian Air Force airfield with a single tarmac area that hosted the 227th Independent Helicopter Squadron flying Mi-8 helicopters between 1992 and 2000 [3] and the 88th Independent Helicopter Squadron between 1977 and 1994.
