Elements of art are stylistic features that are included within an art piece to help the artist communicate. [1] The seven most common elements include line, shape, texture, form, space, color and value, with the additions of mark making, and materiality.
Style refers to the visual appearance of a work of art that relates to other works with similar aesthetic roots, by the same artist, or from the same period, training, location, "school", art movement or archaeological culture: "The notion of style has long been historian's principal mode of classifying works of art".
The Elements of Style is a style guide written by Cornell University professor William Strunk, Jr. and then later revised by E.B. White. (A version of the book can be read online here ). Ornamental or decorative art can usually be analysed into a number of different elements, which can be called motifs. These may often, as in textile art, be repeated many times in a pattern. Important examples in Western art include acanthus, egg and dart, [2] and various types of scrollwork.
