The Mossi are the largest ethnic group in Burkina Faso, constituting 52% of the population, [1] or about 11.1 million people. The other 48% of Burkina Faso's population is composed of more than 60 ethnic groups, mainly the Gurunsi, Senufo, Lobi, Bobo, Bissa and Fulani. [2] The Mossi speak the Mòoré language.
The word Silmi-Mossi means "Fulani-Mossi" in Mossi language, from Silmiiga (pl.Silmiisi) which means fulani, foulbe; and of Moaaga (at pl. Moosé) which naturally designates the Mossi. We should therefore say exactly a Silmi-moaaga in the singular, the Silmisi-Moosé in the plural, but, by abbreviation, the Mossis say a Silmi-moaaga, Silmi-Mossi.
