Solar System models, especially mechanical models, called orreries, that illustrate the relative positions and motions of the planets and moons in the Solar System have been built for centuries. While they often showed relative sizes, these models were usually not built to scale.
It looks like it would be used as an illustration in a children's book about the solar system rather than a serious teaching tool. The mosaic is intended to be complementary to the Voyager 1 ' s Family Portrait acquired from the outer edge of the Solar System on February 14, 1990.
