Sand fences are employed to control erosion, help sand dune stabilization, keep sand off roadways, and to recruit new material in desert areas. Sand fences are also commonly employed following storm events in order to aid in the dune recovery process, [1] particularly in developed areas where dunes are critical for protection of property. [2]
Sand dunes are vulnerable to human activities. Therefore, they need as little human interaction as possible for their protection. Human coastal activities has led to the erosion and loss of plant life on sand dunes. [19] Plant life has been established as an important stabilizing factor of sand dunes and the loss of it will cause more erosion.
When not enough sand is available, the beach cannot recover after storms. Many areas of high erosion are due to human activities. Reasons can include: seawalls locking up sand dunes, coastal structures like ports and harbors that prevent longshore transport, and dams and other river management structures.
In 2011, the Surfers' Point working group relocated the bike path and parking lot. To stabilize the area the project constructed a "cobble mattress" on the back beach. Sand was placed in the retreat zone to complement the cobbles and help rebuild the dunes. Later, the project constructed dunes using sand sourced from other beaches with excess sand.
A large dune complex is called a dune field, [7] while broad, flat regions covered with wind-swept sand or dunes, with little or no vegetation, are called ergs or sand seas. [ 8 ] [ 9 ] [ 10 ] Dunes occur in different shapes and sizes, but most kinds of dunes are longer on the stoss (upflow) side, where the sand is pushed up the dune, and have ...
