I don't really think that the possibility for vandalism is a good arguement against image placeholders.
Second, these "no free image" placeholder images in the absence of real images are ugly. Third, "No Free Image, Click Here if you Own One" is meaningless to 99.9% of Wikipedia users - and probably 95% of Wikipedia editors.
