Street scene in Nottoway. Nottoway, or Nottoway Court House, is a census-designated place (CDP) in and the county seat of Nottoway County, Virginia, United States. [1] The population at the time of the 2010 Census was 84. [2] This had decreased to 63 by the 2020 Census. [3] Nottoway was originally known as Lewistown.
The people of this "Nottoway Tribe", now numbering between 400 and 500, call themselves Cheroenhaka, meaning "People At The Fork Of The Stream". Before the county established its own government, it was known as Nottoway Parish, a district of Amelia County. Nottoway Parish became Nottoway County by legislative act in 1788.
