Elnora bella Procter was born on june 27th, 1923, in Edmonton, Alberta. [1] [5] Her parents were of Black and Creole heritage and were originally from the State of Oklahoma. They were drawn to the area by a 1906 advertisement to purchase a quarter section (160 acres (65 ha)) of land for $10, among more than 10,000 Black homesteaders who did so.
Fairbairn played the trumpet since the age of 5, [1] as well as studying piano. Until the age of 16, he was a trumpetist in community groups. While in the 10th grade at Vancouver's Prince of Wales Secondary School, Fairbairn founded his first band The Spectres, managed by Bruce Allen, who would remain with Fairbairn through his career.
