Set many years after the events of Atelier Meruru in the Arland Republic, Elmerulia "Lulua" Frixell−adopted daughter of famed alchemist Rorona Frixell−is studying under the alchemist Piana in the town of Arklys. One day while Rorona has left on an errand, a book called the Alchemyriddle falls from the sky onto Lulua's head.
Both alchemy and combat are necessary to grow the characters. Unlike typical role-playing games, there are no experience points or characters levels. Instead, through combat, characters earn "action points" which are used in the character-specific "grow book" to unlock new skills, and character bonuses such as additional health or mana points.
Players are expected to finish the main quest of passing an alchemist certification exam within a year, with the rest of the game not limited by in-game time. As time passes day and night will cycle. It is the first game in the Atelier series to feature an open world. [6]
