The Subaru Impreza WRX STI is high performance specification model of the Subaru Impreza compact car line, manufactured by Japanese automaker Fuji Heavy Industries Subaru. In 1988, FHI created Subaru Tecnica International (STi) as a its motorsport division to develop and compete in the FIA World Rally Championship and other motorsports activities.
The team utilizes the Subaru WRX STI and rally prepares the cars nearly entirely in-house at Vermont SportsCar, including the shell prep, roll cages, engines and many of the composite parts. The same highly skilled rally technicians that build each of team's cars at Vermont SportsCar also serve as the service crew that travel to each event.
STi president Ryuichiro Kuze partnered with British firm Prodrive in 1989 to develop a rally car using the Subaru Legacy chassis. [6] The resulting performance model was the Legacy RS, which produced 220 PS (160 kW; 220 hp) mated to a five speed gearbox and weighing just over 2,600 pounds; [citation needed] it was manufactured by Subaru to homologate the type for FIA Group A racing.
