Hadestown is a musical with music, lyrics, and book by Anaïs Mitchell.It tells a version of the ancient Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice. Eurydice, a young girl looking for something to eat, goes to work in a hellish industrial version of the Greek underworld to escape poverty and the cold, and her poor singer-songwriter lover Orpheus comes to rescue her.
Although the album does not tell a specific story like her previous album Hadestown, Mitchell has stated that the album was "influenced by the recession", and that many of the lyrics allude to the loss of certainty and the old ways in modern-day America: "There's a feeling that the American is something of an orphan, that we can't trust we're going to be taken care of".
A few years before her previous album, Young Man in America, Mitchell started becoming more interested in traditional music.She ended up purchasing a series of books: the 'Francis J. Child Collection of Ballads', also known as the "Child Ballads", [2] and was inspired by the "beautiful" language and the "pure-heartedness of storytelling" of the songs. [3]
