Brothers Pete and Ernie Harris established their manufacturing business, Harris Manufacturing, in the 1940s and 50's. While looking for a way to expand their business, inspired by an increasing number of individuals building early pontoon boats on 55-gallon barrels and drop tanks from airplanes, the brothers founded Harris FloteBote Marine in 1957. At the time, the town, located in Winnebago County, Iowa, was undergoing an economic downturn, so Hanson and a group of community leaders convinced a California firm, Modernistic Industries, to open a travel trailer factory in a bid to revive the local economy.
In 1961, it started to produce plastic model kits, and the company name was changed to "Fujimi Mokei Co., Ltd.". In the 1960s, it released 1/70 and 1/50 scale airplanes, 1/550 scale warships, 1/44 scale tanks, and historical structures in various scales. In 1970, Fujimi started producing airplane models in 1/72 and 1/48 scales.
