When launched the submarine became the 1000th Russian/Soviet submarine constructed. [1] After the collapse of the Soviet Union the submarine continued to serve in the Russian navy. In July 2002 the submarine went into overhaul and didn't return until early 2008. [2] As of 2010 the submarine is on active duty with the Russian Northern Fleet.
The submarine was laid down on July 24, 1992 at the Severodvinsk Shipyard as pennant number 664 of the Oscar II class cruise missile submarines. In April 1993, submarine 664 received the name Belgorod after the Russian city with that name and the tactical designation K-139.

On 5 July 2017, the submarine from a submerged position destroyed a sea target in the water area of the Barents Sea, located at a distance of about 400 kilometres (250 mi) with a Granit cruise missile. [11] In July 2019, the submarine took part in the celebration of the Navy Day on the roadstead of Kronstadt.
The two have participated in submarine rescue exercises in the Baltic Sea. The submarine was inspected by the Russian Prime Minister, Vladimir Putin on 13 December 2010. [citation needed] With an estimated cost of 23 billion RUR (~US$900 million), the new submarine has no significant differences from the lead ship, SSBN Yury Dolgorukiy.
