The Frégate de Défense et d'Intervention (English: Defence and Intervention Frigate) or FDI, [4] formerly denominated Frégate de Taille Intermédiaire (English: Medium-Size Frigate) or FTI, is a programme launched in 2015 to produce a new class of first-rank French frigates to complement the Aquitaine-class.
The Kimon class, also known as the FDI HN, is a frigate class for the Hellenic Navy. The FDI HN is a more heavily armed version of the French frigates . The lead ship is expected to be commissioned in early 2025.
The frigate was later towed by tugboats to the outfitting pier on the bank of Scorff River. [4] It had been planned to commission Amiral Ronarc'h in 2024. However, delays in her fitting out and the start of sea trials pushed back her likely commissioning and full entry into service into 2025. [ 10 ]
The French Navy does not use the term "destroyer". While officially classed as "frigates", the larger major surface combatants of the first rank are nevertheless registered as destroyers (with hull numbers "Dxxx"; though, as of 2023, French Navy vessels are incrementally having hull numbers removed from display on all ships).
The FDI program follows on the construction of 8 FREMM multipurpose frigates for the navy, the first of which was delivered in 2012 and the last in 2022. [17] In 2015 the order of FREMM-class units was reduced to 8 ships and it was decided to proceed with the purchase of FDI medium-size frigates instead. [18] [19]
