Taos Downtown Historic District is located in the center of Taos, New Mexico. It is roughly bounded by Ojitos, Quesnel, Martyr's Lane, Las Placitas and Ranchitos Streets. The De Vargas Street House is a two-story adobe building; the first floor is original and the second floor was reconstructed based on the original in the 1920s. Most of the house is constructed from adobe brick, which was a Spanish colonial technology, while a few lower wall sections are puddled adobe characteristic of pre-Spanish pueblo buildings.

Mary Belle de Vargas lived with her parents all her life. [10] She died in 1946 at the age of 44, in Natchitoches. [11] Her admirer and correspondent Gualterio Quinonas published a biography, The Armless Marvel, Mary Belle (1949). [12] In 2005, there were plans for an exhibition of surviving paintings and drawing by de Vargas, in Natchitoches. [9]

Water was generally supplied by wells. Residents had chickens, pigs, cows and horses that grazed on pastureland between La Loma and the Taos Plaza. [3] The settlers built the San Antonio church in the plaza, which was blessed in October 1876 by Archbishop Lamy. They also helped found the town of Taos. Some of the residents were artists. [2]
