Darth Maul is a character in the Star Wars franchise created by George Lucas.He first appeared in the prequel film Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace (1999). Maul returned in the animated television series Star Wars: The Clone Wars (2008–2014; 2020) and Star Wars Rebels (2014–2018), as well as the standalone film Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018).
In this story arc, the Death Watch ally themselves with Darth Maul and several crime syndicates (in an alliance known as the Shadow Collective) with the intent of performing false flag operations against the Mandalorian people in order to stage a coup against Duchess Satine Kryze, the pacifist ruler of Mandalore and Bo-Katan's sister.
Ventress survives and her revenge against Dooku sets off a chain of events including the return of Sidious' former apprentice and Dooku's predecessor, Darth Maul. [ 73 ] In season five, Sidious personally travels to the planet Mandalore to confront Maul, who has become the leader of Death Watch.
The plot follows Darth Maul, who was captured by Darth Sidious at the end of the season 5 episode "The Lawless". He is tortured by Count Dooku for information about the Shadow Collective and the allies Maul has made. Maul escapes and heads to Zanbar to command the Death Watch army, but is followed by General Grievous and his droids.
Maul's debut in the second season of Rebels was thus intended to be a one-off appearance; his death was to be at the hands of Darth Vader, but the writers felt that the two characters lacked an emotional connection and that Maul's death would overcomplicate an already loaded episode with Ahsoka Tano's confrontation with Vader.
Meanwhile, Darth Maul infiltrates the Theed Palace and engages Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan in a lightsaber duel. Maul mortally wounds Qui-Gon before being bisected by Obi-Wan and falling down a shaft. Before Qui-Gon dies, he asks Obi-Wan to train Anakin. The Republic arrests Gunray, and Palpatine is elected as Chancellor.
