Floyd Mitchell (born 1967 or 1968) is an American police officer who has served as chief of the Oakland Police Department since 2024. He previously served as chief of the Lubbock Police Department from 2019 to 2023, as well as chief of the Temple, Texas , police department.

[9] [10] On March 27, 2024, Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao introduced Floyd Mitchell as the city's newest chief of police, more than a year after the firing of former Chief LeRonne Armstrong. He took office on May 13, 2024.
Thao fired Armstrong on February 15, 2023, [39] and indicated she had lost confidence in his ability to reform the police department. [40] Armstrong filed a wrongful terminational lawsuit against the city of Oakland and Thao. [41] In March 2024, Thao appointed Floyd Mitchell as the new police chief. [42]
