Elections were held for the Mayor of Newham and for all 60 seats on the council. The Labour Party candidate Rokhsana Fiaz won the mayoral election. [1]
These elections were the first to the newly formed borough. Previously elections had taken place in the County Borough of East Ham, County Borough of West Ham, Metropolitan Borough of Woolwich and Municipal Borough of Barking. These boroughs were joined to form the new London Borough of Newham by the London Government Act 1963.

Elections to Newham London Borough Council were held in May 1971. The whole council was up for election. Turnout was 27.3%. This election had aldermen as well as councillors. Labour won all ten aldermen positions.
