In 1968, the small-block Ford stroke was increased from 2.87 in (72.9 mm) to 3 in (76.2 mm), giving a total displacement of 4,942 cc (4.9 L; 301.6 cu in). The connecting rods were shortened to allow the use of the same pistons as the 289.
