Brivudine is used for the treatment of herpes zoster in adult patients. It is taken orally once daily, in contrast to aciclovir, valaciclovir and other antivirals. [1] A study has found that it is more effective than aciclovir, but this has been disputed because of a possible conflict of interest on part of the study authors.
Shingles, also known as herpes zoster or zona, [6] is a viral disease characterized by a painful skin rash with blisters in a localized area. [2] [7] Typically the rash occurs in a single, wide mark either on the left or right side of the body or face. [1] Two to four days before the rash occurs there may be tingling or local pain in the area.
Shingles vaccination is the only way for adults to be protected against both shingles and postherpetic neuralgia, with the vaccine Shingrix providing 90% protection from postherpetic neuralgia. [3] The chickenpox vaccine is approved for infants to prevent chickenpox , which also protects against PHN from a herpes zoster infection.
Aciclovir topical cream is commonly associated (≥1% of patients) with dry or flaking skin or transient stinging/burning sensations. Infrequent adverse effects include erythema or itch. [15] When applied to the eye, aciclovir is commonly associated (≥1% of patients) with transient mild stinging.
Side effects may occur from sudden discontinuation and prolonged, continuous use can lead to skin thinning. [2] Intermittent use of topical steroids for atopic dermatitis is safe and does not cause skin thinning.
Valaciclovir, also spelled valacyclovir, is an antiviral medication used to treat outbreaks of herpes simplex or herpes zoster (shingles). [2] It is also used to prevent cytomegalovirus following a kidney transplant in high risk cases. [2] It is taken by mouth. [2] Common side effects include headache and vomiting. [2]
