The hospital has its origins in a body called the Society in Aid of Incurable Persons in Dundee and District. This was set up around 1896 and raised funds to acquire Balgay House, in Dundee's Jedburgh Road.
The original hospital (centre section only), now the A. K. Bell Library. Perth Royal infirmary has its origins in the County and City Infirmary in York Place. This Grecian style building was designed by William Mackenzie, with the original cost of the land and buildings being £6812-15-3 ½d.
Tayside continues to have a joint electoral, valuation, and health board. It retained its police and fire services until they were merged, on 1 April 2013, into bodies known as Police Scotland and the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service, which cover the whole of Scotland. Tayside Children's Hospital is a children's hospital located within Ninewells Hospital. It serves children, aged from birth up until their fourteenth birthday, who live in Dundee, Angus, Perth and Kinross and north east Fife; as such, it was so named after a region rather than a city to reflect the wide area that it covers.
King's Cross now serves as the administrative headquarters of NHS Tayside. The hospital is also the site of NHS Tayside's Kings Cross Health and Community Care Centre, which offers several outpatient services including audiology, physiotherapy, dentistry and x-ray and is also the base for Dundee's "Out of Hours GP Service". The first donation to the hospital was a legacy from Mrs Clerk-Rattray in 1882. [1] Subsequently, Mrs Macpherson of Newton Castle gifted the site and further donations were then forthcoming. [1]
The facility was intended to replace the aging Irvine Memorial Hospital and was procured under a private finance initiative contract in 2005. [1] It was designed by Campbell and Arnott and incorporates a GP's facility known as the Atholl Medical Centre. [2]
