It was a private corporation, formed in 1988 and based in Kiruna, and upon its formation took over the administration and handling of TV licences from the state-owned telecommunications company Televerket.

Daily broadcasts started in 1957 and Radiotjänst was renamed as Sveriges Radio. The first television news programme in Sweden, Aktuellt, was broadcast on 2 September 1958 and continues to this day on SVT2. A second channel was discussed throughout the 1960s.
