Kinnick Stadium is a stadium located in Iowa City, Iowa, United States. It is the home stadium of the University of Iowa Hawkeyes football team. Opened in 1929 as Iowa Stadium to replace Iowa Field, it currently holds up to 69,250 people, making it the 7th largest stadium in the Big Ten, and one of the 20 largest university owned stadiums in the nation.
The largest stadium used by a professional team falls at number 15 on the list. Not included are several large stadiums used by teams in the now-defunct NFL Europa , as these were all built for and used mainly for association football , or Rogers Centre , located in Canada (although it does host occasional American football games).
They are ranked by capacity, which is the maximum number of spectators the stadium can normally accommodate. All U.S. stadiums with a current capacity of 10,000 or more are included in the list. The majority of these stadiums are used for American football , either in college football or the National Football League (NFL).
It took all of one week for the fans inside Kinnick Stadium to remind everyone that they are always a factor for the Iowa Hawkeyes.
Opinion: The University can and should do better than releasing live hawks before games, write Kathleen Janz, Jodeane Cancilla and Flora Cassiliano.
A 21-year attendance record was broken on Sunday when 55,646 people packed into Kinnick Stadium to watch Iowa women’s basketball team take on the DePaul Blue Demons in an exhibition game.
