A template is a Wikipedia page created to be included in other pages. It usually contains repetitive material that may need to show up on multiple articles or pages, often with customizable input. Templates sometimes use MediaWiki parser functions, nicknamed "magic words", a simple scripting language. Template pages are found in the template ...
For years in HTML, a table has always forced an implicit line-wrap (or line-break). So, to keep a table within a line, the workaround is to put the whole line into a table, then embed a table within a table, using the outer table to force the whole line to stay together. Consider the following examples: Wikicode (showing table forces line-break)
A simple trick allows to protect the "|" in template parameter values while still arriving as real "|" delimiter in the Wiki table, see the magic word {{!}}. Note that "!" (exclamation mark) has no problems with templates, it's the other delimiter used in Wiki tables. Here's the code for plan B: {|
In this example, the scope attribute defines what the headers describe, column or row, which screen readers use. You can add a table using HTML rather than wiki markup, as described at HTML element#Tables. However, HTML tables are discouraged because wikitables are easier to customize and maintain, as described at manual of style on tables.
Editors sometimes use headerless tables as an aid to content layout, especially where it is easier than the equivalent use of divs and CSS styling. For complex layouts, rowspan and colspan may be used, but again it is sometimes simpler and more maintainable to use nested tables. Nested tables must start on a new line.
Do not use table code directly to make an infobox or navigation template (a navbox or sidebar). Use an appropriate template, e.g. {}, {{Infobox3cols}}, {}, {{Navbox with collapsible groups}}, {} or {{Sidebar with collapsible lists}}. Wikipedia:List of infoboxes has numerous subject-specific infoboxes for use in articles.
A template involves repeated elements mostly visible to the end-user/audience. Using a template to layout elements usually involves less graphic design skill than that which was required to design the template. Templates are used for minimal modification of background elements and frequent modification (or swapping) of foreground content.
inner or innercollapse: Uses the mw-collapsible innercollapse classes to make the table collapsible, but only collapse if the table is within a larger table with the outercollapse class. outer or outercollapse: Uses the outercollapse class to collapse any smaller tables within the table it that use the innercollapse class.
