Montgomery County is a county in the U.S. state of Texas.As of the 2020 U.S. census, the county had a population of 620,443. [1] The county seat is Conroe. [2] The county was created by an act of the Congress of the Republic of Texas on December 14, 1837, and is named for the town of Montgomery. [3]

Within Texas' modern boundaries, the county included the Trans-Pecos and most of the Panhandle. The county was abolished when Texas ceded its western lands under the Compromise of 1850. In July 1837, the town of Montgomery, Texas was founded in the middle of the Lake Creek Settlement, at the site of W. W. Shepperd's store. It was located near the West Fork of the San Jacinto River, which had keel boat navigation to that point.
