The state has sixteen medical schools, [6] thirteen conventional and three Osteopathic programs. There are ten law schools, [7] which are accredited by the American Bar Association, including Southern Methodist University Dedman School of Law, Texas Tech University School of Law, and University of Houston Law Center.
Prospective students apply through the Texas Medical & Dental Schools Application Service (TMDSAS). The college awards the Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree (DO). The program consists of four years of curriculum, with years 1 and 2 consisting of on-campus didactic lectures, small group assignments laboratory and clinical experience, while years 3 and 4 are completed at selected clinical sites.
One of the largest medical schools in the United States, John P. and Kathrine G. McGovern Medical School was established by The University of Texas System Board of Regents in 1969 to help shore up the projected state and national shortages of physicians. The school is divided into 23 departments and various specialized research centers.
