On 2 June 1992, the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic (NKR), a former breakaway state in the South Caucasus region, adopted a flag derived from the flag of Armenia, to which a white, five-toothed, stepped carpet pattern is added, beginning at the two verges of the flag's fly and meeting at a point equal to one-third of the distance from that side. Artsakh (/ ˈ ɑːr t s ɑː x,-s æ x / ART-sa(h)kh), officially the Republic of Artsakh [d] or the Republic of Nagorno-Karabakh (/ n ə ˌ ɡ ɔːr n oʊ k ər ə ˈ b ɑː k / nə-GOR-noh kər-ə-BAHK), [e] [7] was a breakaway state in the South Caucasus whose territory was internationally recognised as part of Azerbaijan.
Nagorno-Karabakh is a disputed region in the South Caucasus region of Eurasia. It encompasses the former Republic of Artsakh , which was a de facto independent republic , and was de jure part of the Republic of Azerbaijan , [ 1 ] about 270 kilometers (170 mi) west of the Azerbaijani capital of Baku and neighbouring Armenia .
