As required by the Land Act of 1851, a claim for Rancho Ojo del Agua de la Coche was filed with the Public Land Commission in 1853, [6] [7] and the grant was patented to Murphy's son, Bernard Murphy in 1860. [8] Bernard Murphy was killed in the explosion of the steamboat "Jenny Lind" en route from Alviso to San Francisco on April 11, 1853.
In 1848, the heirs of Carlos Castro sold Rancho San Francisco de las Llagas to Martin Murphy's sons Daniel and Bernard. Martin Murphy had brought his family to California with the Stephens-Townsend-Murphy Party in 1844. Martin Murphy purchased Rancho Ojo del Agua de la Coche to the north of Rancho San Francisco de las Llagas in 1846.
Rancho Las Uvas was a 11,080-acre (44.8 km 2) Mexican land grant in present-day Santa Clara County, California given in 1842 by Governor Juan Alvarado to Lorenzo Pinedo (often spelt Pineda). [1] The name means "ranch of the grapes" and is derived from an abundance of wild grapes ( Vitis californica ) along the area's main watercourses.

Morgan Hill is approximately 24 mi (39 km) south of downtown San Jose, 13 mi (21 km) north of Gilroy, and 15 mi (24 km) inland from the Pacific coast.Lying in a roughly 4-mile-wide (6 km) southern extension of the Santa Clara Valley, it is bounded by the Santa Cruz Mountains to the west and the Diablo Range to the east.
