Cabrini took religious vows in 1877 and added Xavier (Saverio) to her name to honor the Jesuit saint, Francis Xavier, the patron saint of missionary service. When the orphanage closed in 1880, Cabrini and seven other women who had taken religious vows with her founded the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus (M.S.C.). [1]

After he was named Bishop of Newark, he invited the sisters to expand their activities to his new diocese, and acquired the Gillespie estate for their use. The motherhouse of the US province is located at Villa Walsh in Morristown, New Jersey. [5] Among other schools, the sisters staffed that of Our Lady of Sorrows in Jersey City, New Jersey. [6]
Church of St. Francesca Cabrini founded by the Missionaries of St. Charles Borromeo in 1965 in Bedford, England. The founding of the institute was approved by Pope Leo XIII in a papal brief dated 25 November 1887 and the approval of its Constitution by a decree of the Sacred Congregation of Propaganda followed on 3 October 1908.
The first house where the first sisters or beatas resided were made of cane and nipa. The second house, which was bigger than the first, became roofless after the 1880 Luzon earthquakes. The third house was made of strong foundation, now part of Saint Rita College - Manila and is still standing today. A Chapel was built on June 1, 1907.
