The hospital is a division of UW Health. [1] The hospital was founded in 1911, opening its doors in 1918 following a period of fund raising. In the mid-1990s the hospital proposed a major campus overhaul that was eventually approved by the city of Rockford, providing SwedishAmerican assistance in recovering a blighted neighborhood nearby.
It is operated by UnityPoint Health. It primarily serves southern Wisconsin and northwestern Illinois. It serves as a teaching hospital for the University of Wisconsin–Madison. [2] The joint operating agreement (JOA) between UnityPoint Health – Meriter and UW Health formalized and expanded their collaboration in care for patients. [3]

The UWMC opened on May 5, 1959, and became home to the world's first pain center and also the world's first long-term kidney dialysis which was developed by UW professor Belding H. Scribner, M.D. The 2007 issue of U.S. News & World Report's "America's Best Hospitals" ranked the UWMC 10th out of 5,000 hospitals nationwide. [2]
