HMS Thames was a Mersey-class cruiser launched in 1885 for the Royal Navy. Thomas Benjamin Frederick Davis was a wealthy businessman, yachtsman and philanthropist. In 1920 Davis bought the Thames from the British Admiralty and sent her to South Africa.
However, the base at Saldanha soon reverted to a training base in 1951 when the Naval Gymnasium was set up with 44 trainees reporting for a year's training. [1] Before the unit was christened SAS Saldanha on 1 March 1956, it was known as the "Naval and Marine Gymnasium" and "SAS Drommedaris."

Saldanha Bay (Afrikaans: Saldanhabaai) is a natural harbour on the south-western coast of South Africa. [1] The town that developed on the northern shore of the bay, also called Saldanha , was incorporated with five other towns into the Saldanha Bay Local Municipality in 2000.
As of December 2015, it is the main base of the South African Navy, and home port of the frigate and submarine flotillas.The base also houses training facilities for the frigates and submarines.

A major exhibit of the museum's is the SAS Assegaai, a Daphné class submarine. It is the first and thus far only South African Navy submarine to have been converted into a museum ship . [ 2 ] The submarine is currently [ when? ] closed to the public, pending plans for her placement ashore.
