This is a list of pig breeds usually considered to originate or have developed in Canada and the United States. Some may have complex or obscure histories, so inclusion here does not necessarily imply that a breed is predominantly or exclusively from those countries.
The Duroc Italiana is a large pig with grey skin and reddish hair. It is fast-growing and strong, particularly in the limbs; these qualities are transmitted to its offspring. For pigs to be brought to high finished weights standing on concrete floors, very strong limbs are desirable. [1]

The modern breed descends from animals found in East Texas in the late 1960s and early 1970s by H. C. Wengler, who cross-bred two wattled red sows with a Duroc boar to start the "Wengler Red Waddle" line. Other animals were found, also in East Texas, about 20 years later by Robert Prentice, and became the Timberline line of Red Wattles.

The breed started being used in shows around the 1950s. Durocs are predominantly kept for their meat, and are appreciated for their hardiness and quick but thorough muscle growth. [1] The first pig to have its genome sequenced was a Duroc sow named T.J. Tabasco. [4]
