The mridangam is an ancient percussion instrument originating from the Indian subcontinent. It is the primary rhythmic accompaniment in a Carnatic music ensemble. In Dhrupad , a modified version, the pakhawaj , is the primary percussion instrument.
Nidumolu Sumathi (born 16 October 1950), also known as Dandamudi Sumathi is an Indian percussionist, primarily playing the mridangam. [1] She is married to "Mridangam Maestro" Sri Dandamudi Ram Mohan Rao. She is one of the first female mridangam players in India, and the first female Laya Vinyasam artist.
Kandiah Anandanadesan (1961 –16 April 2020) was a Sri Lankan-British mridangam teacher and mridangam artiste with a Carnatic music background. He also taught the craft and art of practicing mridangam to students and he was affectionately called as Anandan master by his students. He migrated to UK in early 1980s.
