Area codes were assigned based on the volume of traffic and the speed of dialing the code on a rotary electromechanical dial phone, so that the higher the volume of traffic, the less time it took to dial the area code. Area code 212 was the quickest, followed by 213 (Los Angeles) and 312 (Chicago), etc., all the way to 919 (North Carolina).
