Spirit of Jefferson is an independent, weekly newspaper covering Charles Town and Jefferson County, West Virginia. Originally two separate papers, "The Spirit of Jefferson", first published in 1844, and "The Farmer's Advocate", first published in 1890. were both sold to Ralph Dorsey in 1935. [2] In 1948, the two papers were merged.
The newspaper changed its name in 1913 to The Martinsburg West Va. The U.S. state of West Virginia has 55 counties. Fifty of them existed at the time of the Wheeling Convention in 1861, during the American Civil War, when those counties seceded from the Commonwealth of Virginia to form the new state of West Virginia. [1] West Virginia was admitted as a separate state of the United States on June 20, 1863. [2]

In the years that followed, Loewen rapidly expanded his company, purchasing hundreds of small independent funeral homes. The following is a list of West Virginia Confederate Units which were composed mostly or notably by citizens of the 50 counties of western Virginia which eventually became West Virginia. These units, with the exception of the Kentucky units, are designated "Virginia", as were the Union regiments from western Virginia.
On January 15, 1786, the Virginia General Assembly passed an act establishing the town of Smithfield on land owned by John Smith II and William Smith. A post office was established in 1806; and since there was another town called Smithfield in the state, a different name was needed to avoid confusion.
