Kangaroo totemic ancestor – Australian Aboriginal bark painting, Arnhem Land, c. 1915. Kangaroos, Wallabies and other Macropodidae have become emblems and symbols of Australia, as well as appearing in popular culture both internationally and within Australia itself.
By the 1820s, an unofficial coat of arms consisting of a shield depicting four symbols of commerce (a golden fleece, ship, anchor and wheat), supported by a kangaroo and emu with the motto "Advance Australia" was widely used across the eastern colonies of Australia. It appeared on buildings and personal goods as a branding device for Australia.
The supporters are a red kangaroo on the dexter and sinister (the viewer's right and left) holding up the shield. They are each depicted proper (in natural colours). Each kangaroo holds in their forepaw a boomerang without any marks or symbols on it, and they stand upon a grassy compartment. There is no motto with the coat of arms.
In 1986, a new green-and-gold coloured "Australian Made" logo featuring a stylised kangaroo in a triangle was launched as part of the "Australian Made" campaign launched by Prime Minister Bob Hawke on 31 August 1986. [8] [9] The logo was designed by Ken Cato. [7]
