Peace Like a River (2001) is a novel by Leif Enger, [3] who took the title from the lyrics of the hymn "It Is Well with My Soul", which was performed at his wedding. Enger wrote the novel to amuse his family, taking story suggestions from his children and giving the lead character asthma to encourage one of his sons, who also has asthma.
"It Is Well With My Soul", also known as "When Peace, Like A River", is a hymn penned by hymnist Horatio Spafford and composed by Philip Bliss.First published in Gospel Hymns No. 2 by Ira Sankey and Bliss (1876), it is possibly the most influential and enduring in the Bliss repertoire and is often taken as a choral model, appearing in hymnals of a wide variety of Christian fellowships.
Enger worked as a reporter and producer for Minnesota Public Radio from 1984 until the sale of Peace Like a River.In the early 1990s, he and his older brother, Lin, writing under the pen name L.L. Enger, produced a series of mystery novels featuring a retired baseball player.
Editors at AllMusic rated this album 3.5 out of 5 stars, with critic Thom Jurek writing that this release sounds completely different to the band's previous effort Heavy Load Blues, but acts as a complement to it, calling this album "a labyrinthine trek through original songs that nod at the band's classic rock influences".
